The Warning Signs of Online Grooming Every Parent Should Know

Online grooming rarely looks like a stranger swooping in. It is a slow, deliberate process that builds trust over weeks or even months. A predator’s first move usually is not anything creepy at all. It starts with attention, praise, or treats that make a young person feel special. Understanding how this process works is one of the most powerful ways parents can protect their children.

Grooming follows a pattern. The offender finds a target, often a child who seems lonely or isolated. Next comes trust-building. That can mean compliments, gifts, or “adult” attention that flatters. From there, the adult works to isolate the child from supportive friends and family, then pushes for secrecy. They may ask the child to move to a more private app, use encrypted messaging, or keep their chats to themselves. Requests for photos or sexualized talk usually come only after that trust and secrecy are locked in.

The warning signs are there if you know what to look for. A child suddenly hiding their screen when you walk by, becoming secretive about who they talk to, receiving gifts or money from someone you have never met, or spending hours in private chat rooms can all be red flags. Watch for a new “friend” who is much older and who pressures the child to keep the friendship a secret. If your child seems withdrawn, anxious, or unusually guarded about their phone, that is worth a calm conversation.

Stay calm and stay engaged. Make asking for help feel safe, never shameful. Remind your child that no one who truly cares for them will demand secrecy or make them uncomfortable. Set privacy controls together, review friend lists, and keep devices in shared spaces. Most importantly, keep the door open. Children who know they will not be blamed are far more likely to tell a parent the moment something feels wrong.
