Online Predators: Separating Fear From Fact While Keeping Kids Safe

Most parents assume a predator hides behind every screen. The facts say otherwise. Research from the University of New Hampshire’s Youth Internet Safety Study shows unwanted sexual solicitations of kids online actually declined sharply over the past two decades. Understanding what is really happening online, instead of reacting to scary headlines, is the first step toward keeping children safe.

When a disturbing story breaks, it fills the news cycle for weeks and can feel far more common than it is. Reality is more measured. According to the Crimes Against Children Research Center, children are actually more likely to face pressure to send sexual content from peers than from adult strangers. That does not mean predators are not out there — it means parents are better served by calm awareness than by constant fear.

Contact with online offenders most often happens in chat rooms, on social media, and inside the chat features of multiplayer games. Many popular kid-focused platforms like Roblox and Animal Jam include built-in filters designed to block inappropriate comments. Those tools are imperfect, but they do real work.

Arm your child with information instead of anxiety. Explain that someone online could approach them to ask for personal details, exchange pictures, or push for an in-person meeting — and that it might happen with someone who feels like a friend. Make clear they can always come to you, or to another trusted adult, the moment a conversation turns uncomfortable. That simple, non-frightening permission to ask for help is one of the most powerful safety tools a family can have.

If someone has made your child uncomfortable online — or if you have reason to believe a predator is targeting a child — do not wait. Report it so the situation can be addressed before it escalates.
