FBI Warns of Coordinated Online Predator Networks Targeting Children

The FBI issued a direct letter to parents this year about a trend it is watching closely: coordinated online predators who methodically target children on the messaging apps, social media sites, and gaming platforms kids use every day. The warning is not meant to frighten families, but to help them recognize the pattern early — before an online contact turns into something much darker.

Law enforcement describes these as organized predatory networks that often rely on what it calls sadistic online exploitation. The playbook is consistent. First, a predator identifies a target and builds trust through shared play or friendly conversation. Then the exchange quietly moves out of public spaces and into private or anonymous apps. From there, threats, blackmail, and manipulation are used to pressure a child into doing things they would never do on their own.

Where predators gather. Mobile messaging apps, social media, and online gaming are named as the primary hunting grounds. Two things make these spaces dangerous: they are lightly supervised, and a stranger can reach a child directly with almost no barrier.

What parents can do. Keep devices and gaming set-ups in common areas of the home. Learn the communication features of the games and apps your child uses, and turn off open chat and location sharing where possible. Talk openly about online friends, and make clear that your child can always come to you without blame.

Act on red flags early. A new “friend” who is an adult, asks for secrecy, pressures a child to move to a private app, or asks for personal details is a serious warning sign. Do not wait to see what happens next.

Predators rely on silence. The best defense is a child who feels safe speaking up and a parent who knows what to do when something feels wrong.
