Phishing Scams Targeting Parents: How to Spot Them Before It’s Too Late

Your browser is the front door to everything your family does online, and scammers know it. One of the fastest-growing threats facing parents today is phishing, and the messages have gotten scarily convincing.

Phishing is a method where criminals disguise themselves as trusted companies, banks, schools, or even your child’s app. The goal is simple: get you to click a link, enter a password, or hand over personal information. For families, the risk runs beyond money to account takeovers, identity theft, and exposure to more dangerous manipulation.

The messages are no longer the poorly-spelled emails of a decade ago. Many now copy a brand’s exact logos, use urgent subject lines about “compromised accounts,” and arrive at the moment you’re most distracted. Parents are prime targets precisely because they juggle school emails, shipping notices, and payment alerts all day.

Spotting these tricks comes down to a few habits your whole family can learn together. Slow down when a message creates urgency or fear. Verify the sender’s full address rather than just the display name. Never click a link in a message that asks you to sign in; type the official website into your browser instead. When in doubt, call the company through its published number, not one in the email.

Making this family-wide is what turns it into real protection. Kids should know the same rules apply to the games and apps they use, and they should feel comfortable showing a suspicious message to an adult without fear. An alert family is a hard target.

If you or your child ever encounter someone who is manipulating you online, rather than a mere scam, it belongs on the radar of people who can help. Report the interaction so nothing escalates in silence.
