New Online Safety Guide Gives Parents a Practical Framework for Digital Parenting
Parents today are asked to navigate a digital landscape that changes faster than any guidebook can keep up with. AI-generated content, social media algorithms designed for engagement, gaming platforms with open chat, and the constant threat of online exploitation — it is a lot. The problem is not that parents do not care. It is that they do not know where to start.
A new resource aims to change that. The Stanford Social Media Lab, the Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI), and the California Partners Project have released a free guidebook titled A Parent’s Guide to Digital Safety: Helping Kids Navigate Online Risks and Build Healthy Habits. It synthesizes the best available research on what children and teens actually face online and distills it into something parents can use right now.
The centerpiece of the guide is the CALMER framework—a six-step approach designed to replace fear with action:
Communicate — with curiosity, not judgment. Ask your child what they are seeing and doing online before making rules.
Assess and Address — evaluate what your child is actually exposed to and take collaborative steps together.
Listen and Learn — understand what your child is experiencing online without rushing to punish or restrict.
Monitor and Manage — stay aware of your child’s digital activity without turning surveillance into a power struggle.
Educate and Encourage — build skills, not just rules. Children who understand why something is dangerous are far less likely to fall for it.
Report and Use Resources — know when and how to escalate. Whether it is cyberbullying, sextortion, or grooming, there are established channels to report through.
The goal is not to keep kids offline. It is to raise kids who can handle being online—and to give parents the confidence to guide them. The guidebook is available for free through Stanford Social Media Lab and FOSI.
If you or someone you know has encountered online exploitation, do not wait. Report it through the proper channels and make sure the people who need to know are informed. Every child deserves to explore the digital world without becoming a target.
Protect a child today. If you suspect online grooming or exploitation, report a predator or install the Report a Pedophile browser plugin to help track and report dangerous activity online.
