Family Tech Rules: Simple Boundaries That Keep Kids Safer Online

Raising kids online today is harder than ever. Games, apps, and social platforms all compete for their attention, and each one comes with real risks. The good news? You don’t need a perfect strategy. You need a few clear, practical rules your whole family can follow. Simple boundaries reduce risk and help kids build healthier habits, even when you’re not watching.

Start with the basics. Delay a full smartphone until your child is closer to adulthood. A basic “dumb” phone or smartwatch covers the need to reach you. Keep devices out of bedrooms overnight, charging in a shared space. Use devices in common areas where a parent is nearby. Rule out downloads without permission, and review privacy settings together.

The most powerful rule is conversation. Kids are smart, and they can get around almost any parental control. What they can’t easily get around is a parent who talks openly, without judgment, about red flags. Make it normal to discuss scams, cyberbullying, and people who ask for secrets. Keep that door open, and a child who is frightened or confused is far more likely to come to you instead of carrying it alone.

One recent survey found that over half of parents whose kids play chat-enabled games said their child had spoken with a stranger online. Nearly 30% said that stranger encouraged the child to keep talking somewhere else. That push off-platform is a classic grooming sign. Know it. Name it. Teach your child to recognize it.

These habits matter most at night. When a child is alone in their room in the dark, they are more vulnerable to manipulation, secrecy, and requests for private images. Keeping the family charging station in a common area creates a natural pause until morning. It’s one of the simplest changes you can make, and it removes a whole class of risk.
