Building a Family Internet Safety Plan That Actually Gets Followed

A family media plan turns vague worry into clear rules. Most families talk about online safety in passing. Few write it down. A written plan helps parents stay consistent. It also helps kids know exactly what is expected of them.

A plan works best when kids help build it. Children follow rules they helped create. Sit down together and ask what feels unsafe or confusing to them. Then build the rules around their answers. This turns safety from a set of punishments into something the family owns together.

Parental controls are a tool, not the whole answer. Filters block harmful content. They do not build judgment. Judgment comes from conversation. Talk often and naturally about what your child sees online. Keep the door open so a child feels safe raising a concern instead of hiding it.

Strong plans start small. Set screen-free zones, like the dinner table and the hour before bed. Keep one screen active at a time. Store phones in a shared spot overnight. Talk about what is real online and what is designed to sell or persuade. Review the plan together every few months. Technology changes fast, and the rules should change with it.

The American Academy of Pediatrics offers a step-by-step guide for building a family media plan. It is free, practical, and easy to adapt to your routines and values. Read it at HealthyChildren.org.

Take action if something feels wrong. If you ever spot grooming, unwanted advances, or exploitation, document it and report it. Our Report a Predator page walks you through reporting to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, local police, and the platform where it happened. You do not have to handle it alone.
