Why Sharing Your Real-Time Location Online Can Put Kids at Risk

Many teens share their live location online without thinking about who can see it.

Features like Snapchat’s Snap Map, Instagram location sharing, and iPhone’s live location make it easy to let friends and family know where you are. That can be useful at a busy festival or when a parent just wants to know a child arrived home safely. But experts warn it carries serious risks that families rarely talk about.

The danger is real. Canada’s Cybertip.ca, the country’s tipline for reporting online sexual exploitation of children, recently issued an alert warning that teens sharing their real-time location may be opening the door to coercive control, emotional distress, and sextortion threats. In some reported cases, sextorters used a victim’s location to intimidate them, threatening to reach people in their community, like teachers, family, or police.

Location sharing can also show up in unexpected places. A photo uploaded with location metadata can reveal where a child lives, goes to school, or hangs out regularly even after the moment has passed. Combined across apps, tiny location hints can build a detailed picture of someone’s daily routine. A predator can use that to learn where a child will be.

What parents can do. Have the conversation. Ask your teen whether they have location sharing turned on, who can see it, and whether they feel pressured to share. Check the privacy settings on social apps and photo metadata. Encourage them to share location only with a small circle of trusted people, and only when it’s actually useful. If something feels off, they can turn it off entirely.

Real-time location is personal information, just like a home address or a phone number. Treat it that way.
